10 Films We Cannot Wait To See This Year

If there was one positive highlight of the previous year, it was the fact that cinema was once again back in business. Pakistani release ‘Khel Khel Mein‘ performed decently given the prevailing conditions, while Hollywood’s ‘Spiderman: No Way Home’ proved that audiences will throng to watch a big-ticket movie, pandemic or no pandemic. 2022 could prove to be a gamechanger for Pakistani cinema, with an elite set of unreleased films waiting to hit the theaters.

We will surely be lining up to get our advance tickets for these 10 highly anticipated films, listed here in no particular order.

1. The Legend of Maula Jutt

What can we say? Enough has been written, talked, and discussed about this long-awaited project ever since it was announced several years back. Let’s just put it this way: The film will have the combination of 4 of the country’s most sought-after stars: Fawad Khan, Hamza Ali Abbasi, Mahira Khan, and Humaima Malik. The film’s trailer showcased a dark and violent take on the Punjabi cult classic, and we cannot wait to watch!

2. Zarrar

This Shaan Shahid directed venture too has been in the pipeline for a while. Shaan will be playing Zarrar, a Pakistani spy countering security threats on foreign soils, and there were hints in the well-crafted trailer about a plot involving the country’s nuclear program. The film is set to offer plenty of Hollywood-style action thrills, and adding glamor will be Kiran Malik.

3. London Nahi Jaunga

LNJ stars Humayun Saeed, Mehwish Hayat, and Kubra Khan and is the spiritual sequel to the 2017 blockbuster ‘Punjab Nahi Jaungi.’ It is written by Khalil-ur-Rehman Qamar and is supposed to offer breezy family entertainment, with plenty of comedy, romance, and drama. Reports suggest that there is little similarity to the original film.

4. Javed Iqbal: The Untold Story of a Serial Killer

This crime-drama was courageously shot by the team during the pandemic and brings ‘Karachi Se Lahore’ pair of Ayesha Omar and Yasir Hussain back, albeit in a dramatically different setup. Hussain’s turn as the notorious serial killer has already been met with raves by the industry, and his resemblance does seem a little uncanny to us. This one surely is sure to offer serious, thought-provoking content. It releases on January 28.

5. Shoaib Mansoor’s ABG

Not much is known about this project, other than its cryptic acronym and that it stars Emmad Irfani and Maya Ali as the leads. The film was being shot through the pandemic, and reports suggest that ABG will once again be an issue-based film.

6. Ishrat: Made In China

The teaser of this Mohib Mirza directed ventured wowed us with its big-ticket imagery and martial arts thrills. Mirza has pulled out all the stops for his big-screen comeback, where he will be seen playing the titular character of Ishrat, taken from the eponymous sitcom.  Sanam Saeed will be adding much oomph, while the ensemble cast also includes names like Shamoon Abbasi, Ali Kazmi, and Mani.

7. Ghabrana Nahi Hai

Saba Qamar will be returning to the big screen with this Saqib Khan directed venture that features quite a few big names like Zahid Ahmed, Syed Jibran, and Azfal Khan (Rambo). The well-received teaser suggests that it will offer lighthearted entertainment. It is slated for an Eid-ul-Fitr release.

8. Quaid-e-Azam Zindabad

Filmwala’s long-awaited project starring Mahira Khan and Fahad Mustafa releases on Eid-ul-Azha this year, and fans can be sure they will get their money’s worth with plenty of spectacular chases, action sequences, and Nabeel Qureshi’s tongue-in-cheek brand of comedy. Mustafa essays the role of a not-so-honest cop, which is sure to resonate well with his fanbase.

9. Neelofar

In addition to TLMJ, ‘Neelofar’ also banks on the favorite on-screen pair of Fawad Khan and Mahira Khan. Not much has been revealed about the film, except that Fawad and Mahira’s roles are very different from those in TLMJ.

10. Money Back Guarantee

Comedian Faisal Qureishi turns director with MBG, which features a massive ensemble cast. Names like Fawad Khan, Mikaal Zulfiqar, Gohar Rasheed, and Afzal ‘Rambo’ Khan are said to be part of the cast and shooting wrapped up before the pandemic. Cricketer Wasim Akram also turns actor with this project, which should see a release sometime this year.
