Ever since the partition, insulting Muslims has been the forte of Bollywood. Time after time, the Indian entertainment industry has produced derogatory content according to the Islamic faith. In a recent development the Indian Supreme Court has stayed the release of Hindi film ‘Hamare Baarah’ on Thursday, a day before its scheduled release, reported Indian Express.
The court asked Bombay High Court to take a quick decision on a petition which alleged that the film was derogatory to the Islamic faith. The Supreme Court gave its decision after hearing a petition that challenged Bombay High Court’s refusal to halt the release of the film.
The counsel representing the film said that they had removed all the objectionable scenes from the promotional material as per the Bombay HC’s order. This claim was further rejected by the court and said, “We saw the teaser today morning and all scenes are there.”
According to the filmmakers’ lawyers, the makers would have to suffer heavy losses if there was a stay on the release, the SC said, “If teaser is so offensive then what about the whole movie… Prima facie it seems you have failed since you yourself deleted the scenes from the teaser.”
‘Hamare Baarah’ portrays Muslims in a wrong light. The plea in Bombay HC said that the verse from the Quran spoken in the film was being misrepresented. At first, the Bombay HC restrained the makers from releasing the film till June 14. But, a day later, it ordered the Central Board of Film Certification to form a panel to view the film.
