Review: ‘Sunn Mere Dil’ Is A Strong Contender Poised For Victory!

7th Sky Entertainment’s latest outing ‘Sunn Mere Dil’ comes with many expectations. Firstly it is written by Khalil-ur-Rehman Qamar, so one expects the product to be solid with crisp and crunchy dialogues. Secondly, Hasseb Hassan returns to Geo Entertainment after the mega-hit ‘Alif’ and more recently “Jannat Se Aagay”. Thirdly Wajah Ali is back in a Geo project after the humungous success of ‘Tere Bin’. Also, this marks his first time pairing with his real life best friend from fraternity Maya Ali. With reliable names like Amar Khan, Usama Khan and Hira Mani in the leads, does ‘Sunn Mere Dil’ manage to impress? Let’s analyze.

‘Sunn Mere Dil’: The Story So Far

Bilal Abdullah (Wahaj Ali) is a filthy rich alcoholic who visits Pakistan occasionally to manage his deceased father’s business empire. Namdaar (Muhammad Ahmad) is his loyal employee who keeps him updated about the ongoing. Love at first sight occurs when Bilal watches Sadaf Namdaar (Maya Ali) at a traffic signal. The latter is Ahmed’s daughter and has completed her degree in hotel management. On the contrary Ammaar (Usama Khan) is head over heels in love with Sadaf but is scared to express his feelings. Dania (Amar Khan) loves Ammaar and isn’t pleased about his interest in someone else. Finally, he tells Sadaf about his feelings and gets rejected on the spot.

The Good

‘Sunn Mere Dil’ takes off from the word go. Qamar wastes no time in buildup and introduced all the characters. The story is simple but told effectively. Within no time we are rooting to know about the girl Ammaar loves. Some of the scenes stand out. Dania barging into Sadaf’s home to know about Ammaar’s love interest. The cute moments between Zaviyaar and Sadaf are organic. Ammaar’s hope of getting a nod from Sadaf after being rejected several times. Haseeb has undoubtedly evolved as a storyteller, which is apparent in various points. He has mastered the craft of keeping viewers entertained.

The Not So Good

On the flipside ‘Sunn Mere Dil’ has its share of hiccups. The scene where the doctor informs Namdaar about Zaviyaar’s (Shavir Kadwani) illness is too blunt. How could a doctor declare such a big thing with so much ease? The whole debate on Ammaar taking poison (Zeher) becomes irritating after a point. Also, Namdaar revealing the illness to Zaviyar directly and not to his wife Farzana (Saba Hameed) and Sadaf was strange. At times, the long monologues test the patience of viewers.

Dialogues That Stay With You

Khalil-ur-Rehman’s ability to craft deep, thought-provoking, and emotionally charged dialogues is what sets his work apart. And ‘Sunn Mere Dil’ is no different. Qamar beautifully pens the consequences of one-sided love. Why do girls have to face the heat of one-sided love irrespective of the fact that the person is her best friend or class fellow? It’s high time to realize that a girl saying ‘No’ means ‘No’. He questions the misogynistic theory and also highlights its looming threat on girls.  Every character reflects a strong command of language and emotions, leaving a lasting impact.

Hasseb’s Keen Eye On Details

‘Sunn Mere Dil’ is a visual masterpiece, with authenticity in abundance. This trait of Haseeb has become a hallmark of his projects. He handles the scale and grandeur with panache. Shot with state-of-the-art cameras and high-quality framing, every scene is creatively executed and a treat to watch. The sequences shot at Bilal Abdullah’s house are stylishly cut, and every frame is picture-perfect. He gives supreme mass treatment to the enterprise and presents Wahaj Ali in a way that his fans would love.

Promising Cast

Wahaj Ali puts up a decent act. As of now, he is majorly restricted as a drunk guy. We would get to see his range, as the story progresses. Maya Ali continues her top form. She gets a meaty part and justifies every bit of it. She shines in the emotional sequences with her brother. Usama Khan is getting better with each project and proves that he has a bright future ahead. He is convincing as the one-sided Romeo.

The dark horse Amar Khan steals the show and how. She doesn’t care about the screen time, give her a role, and she will add the nuances and mannerisms and transform into the character. So far, she gets some of the best lines and delivers it with the maximum impact. Hira Mani looks stunning and performs well. Veterans Muhammad Ahmed and Saba Hamid are excellent.

Verdict So Far

‘Sunn Mere Dil’ rests on good performances, expert direction, great dialogues and a plot that the masses can relate to. It certainly has the potential to become a blockbuster.
