Bilal Lashari’s The Legend of Maula Jutt has been in the news for the last few years. Whether that’s controversy regarding copyright issues, the casting coup it’s managed to pull off with stars like Fawad Khan, Mahira Khan and Hamza Abbasi or the absolute secrecy around production, the film has not been off anyone’s radar since it was announced in 2014. It seems all the rumors, gossip and controversy is about to be put to rest with the movie’s promotions set to be launched with the first mini teaser releasing on December 21, according to the film’s makers. This sounds like music to our ears — we are keeping our fingers crossed and look forward to seeing the first glimpses of what will hopefully be the defining picture of 2019. For those not in the know, the original Maula Jutt, released in 1978, was the highest grossing Pakistani film for at least a decade. While that film’s legacy i.e. Gandaasas, desi heavies in leads, not to mention loud violent cinema — is highly debatable, we hope director Bilal Lashari (Waar) has handled the subject material in a responsible, mature way. At any rate, we will have some answers in exactly a week!
