Box Office: “The Legend of Maula Jatt” Becomes the Highest Grossing Film In the History of Pakistan

It’s all happening so quickly that we’ve barely paused for breath since the release. “The Legend of Maula Jatt” (TLMJ) has grossed over 80 Cr PKR in one week, making it the highest grossing film in the history of Pakistan*.

The film has been doing roaring business across Pakistan, with over 20 Cr at the domestic box office in first week. This is despite the lack of screens from Cinepax, Cinestar and Nueplex chains. Film now holds the record of biggest first week for any Urdu or Hindi release in Pakistan, a record previously held by Ranbir Kapoor starrer “Sanju”.

However, the film’s performance at the international box office has been incredible. Not since “Bin Roye” in 2015 and “Jawani Phir Nahi Ani 2” has a film surprised at the foreign box office like “The Legend of Maula Jatt”. At the moment, over 60 Cr of the film’s receipts have come from the US, UK, Canada, Europe, Australia and Middle East.

Due to the overwhelming success, 100+ more screens have been added in overseas markets including France, Ghana, Mauritius, and Kuwait.

Over $1 Million in North America in 9 Days!

The Legend of Maula Jatt’s success in the UK and North America is also unprecedented. It has raked in over $1 million in North America (Canada and the USA). No Pakistani film has ever reached this milestone in this short span of time. Heck, most Pakistani films haven’t reached this milestone at all!

The Highest Grossing Film in the History of Pakistan (Unadjusted for Inflation)

While in terms of rupees, “The Legend of Maula Jatt” has thrashed the competition, it’s still not the highest grossing film when taking into account inflation, and the dreaded dollar surge.

TLMJ’s total gross is somewhere around $3.6 million. However, Humayun Saeed’s “Jawani Phir Nahi Ani 2” which grossed $5 million in 2018 is still technically on top with an adjusted gross of 110 Cr!

The second weekend of the film has just begun and reports are coming in for another record breaker. Stay tuned for further updates. “Jatt to Vad Kharaank si Karda Jatt da Tez Gandasa!”
