Our 4 Most Anticipated Pakistani Films of 2024

1. Umro Ayyar: A New Beginning

Ever since that teaser dropped on YouTube in June, we’ve been waiting with bated breath. This film about the supernatural tales of Umro Ayyar, a character present in the collective consciousness of Pakistanis is perhaps the most anticipated Pakistani film of 2024.

It’s a shining hope that after the Legend of Maula Jatt, we’ll get to see theaters buzzing again. Usman Mukhtar, Faran Tahir, Sanam Saeed, Hamza Ali Abbasi, Sana Nawaz, Adnan Siddiqui, Ali Kazmi and Manzar Sehbai all star in his (hopefully) fantasy epic.

Umro Ayyar: A New Beginning hits theaters on Eid Ul Azha 2024.

2.  Aasmaan Bolay Ga

The first teaser of Shoaib Mansoor’s next film was released in December of 2022. It’s been nearly a year since then and there is no update on its release date. Starring Emmad Irfani and Maya Ali, it would dramatize the Indian airstrike on Balakot in 2019 and the Pakistan Airforce’s “Swift Retort”.

We’re still all waiting for Shoaib Mansoor to work his magic again. The last time he worked with the ISPR, he came up with Alpha Bravo Charlie. Maybe Aasmaan Bolay Ga could do that for a new generation.

3. Rawalpindi Express

Shoaib Akhtar may not be the most controversial player in Pakistan’s history, but he definitely had a flair for the theatrical. Still the bowler of the fastest ball ever in international cricket, Shoaib Akhtar is a figure eternally enshrined in the history of the game.

The teaser for the film showed Gohar Rasheed giving it his all as the protagonist. Also present are Faran Tahir, Raheela Agha, and Salman Shahid. As the first cricket biopic ever made in Pakistan, it will be a huge challenge to pull off. We’ll definitely be keeping our eyes out for this one.

4. Neelofar

Neelofar is Fawad Khan and Mahira’s return to the screen as a romantic couple. While we saw them singing to each other on a huge Ferris wheel in The Legend of Maula Jatt, the Humsafar pair haven’t really returned to the romantic genre for over a decade. There is no teaser or release date yet, however, you can be sure that audiences will crowd theaters when Mahira and Fawad reunite.

Other Films We’re Looking Forward To

Here are a few honourable mentions we’re looking forward to as well.

Wakhri

Based on the life and tragic end of Qandeel Baloch, the film stars Faryal Mehmood as an activist who ruffles a lot of feathers when she begins to challenge the patriarchal system in Pakistan. It hits theaters on January 5th, 2024. You can watch the teaser here.

Nayab

Yumna Zaidi’s debut as an aspiring cricketer looks like a promising family entertainer after a very long time. What’s even more exciting is that it’s not coming out on Eid. Nayab will hit theaters on the 26th of January, 2024. Starring Javed Sheikh, Mohammad Fawad Khan, Ehteshamuddin and Faryal Mehmood, it promises a lot of laughs, and thrills. You can watch the trailer here.

Gama Pehelwan Biopic

This project was announced on the heels of the success of The Legend of Maula Jatt. Produced by Shayan Khan of Zashko Films, the Gama Pehelwan biopic is being written by Nasir Adeeb himself. A legendary figure, Gama Pehelwan is touted to be the greatest wrestler of all time because of his undefeated streak.

However, his prime was before the partition of India. Though he stayed in Pakistan, he had retired before the partition. His exploits, if portrayed on screen the right way, could result in gold at the box office.
