Review: ‘Pas-e-Deewar’ Starts On A Promising Note

Green Entertainment has stormed onto our screen with a whirlwind of diverse content, leaving viewers breathless with its gripping narratives and powerhouse performances. So far we have seen, ‘Kabli Pulao’, ‘Jeevan Nagar’, ‘22 Qadam’, ‘Nauroz’, ‘Jindo’, ‘Stand Up Girl’ and now ‘Pas e Deewar’ joins the race. Starring Arsalan Naseer, Noor Zafar Khan and Ali Rehman Khan, the drama serial is a refreshing addition to the list. Revolving around the plight of women in prison, ‘Pas e Deewar’ exposes the injustice done by feudal lords on innocent people.

‘Pas e Deewar’: The Plot

Viewers are introduced to the natural and vibrant scenic beauty of the villages. We are at once introduced to protagonist Ujala (Noor Zafar Khan) running in the green fields to reach her friend’s place. She is curious to know about the results of her graduation. Ujala is married to her cousin Iftikhar (Arsalan Naseer) a young man who talks about justice and supports his fellow farmers. They live a low-key life and at times it’s a struggle for them to make ends meet. Iftikhar is brave and fearless and doesn’t come under the pressure of feudal lord Chaudhry Hashmat (Nayyar Ijaz) who wants to forcefully purchase their land.

Ujala is a devoted wife, she knows the art of tailoring so she earns through it and goes all out to support her husband. She seeks permission to do a job as she has cleared her exams but Iftikhar doesn’t allow her for that. As the story progresses, we see glimpses of another feudal lord played by (Ali Rehman Khan) who secretly stalks Ujala. He wants to get her in his life at any cost. Meanwhile, Iftikhar’s financial conditions are getting worse day by day. Ujala’s brother Maqbool seeks support via Ali Rehman’s character. He makes full use of this opportunity and gets him a job in Dubai. Ujala isn’t happy with this news as he doesn’t want her husband to go abroad.

The Good Things In ‘Pas-e-Deewar’

Two episodes down, ‘Pas e Deewar’ doesn’t open with a bang but the director establishes the narrative at a good pace. Viewers have a clear understanding of every character’s backstory, hence it is easy to relate with the story. We have seen such narratives earlier but the presentation and the fresh pairing of the lead actors makes it refreshing. The flaws and strengths of the protagonists are etched out in a real manner. Ali Rehman’s introduction scene is shot well and gives the maximum impact. The director also succeeds in mirroring the realities and complexities of marriages.

The Performances Of ‘Pas e Deewar’

Arsalan Naseer gets a meaty part. He looks dashing but somehow looks wooden and his lack of expressions is evident on many occasions. Noor Zafar Khan is quite average. There is nothing extraordinary about her act so far. However, everything on her face is excessive, be it the foundation or mascara. When do village girls wear so much makeup? Why is her look so pristine, the rawness of the rural look is missing. Ali Rehman Khan is a surprise package, with minimum scenes, he leaves maximum impact.

Verdict So Far

Summing it up, ‘Pas-e-Deewar’ takes a decent start. It manages to engage viewers with its subtle storytelling and well-plotted twists and turns. Moreover, the teasers of episode three look promising and may fetch potential viewership.
