‘Gentleman’ started with a promise of delivering something different. And it did. 28 episodes down the Humayun Saeed and Yumna Zaidi starrer ended its glorious run with a power-packed finale. ‘Gentleman’ had all the ingredients of a classic mass entertainer: Munna (Humayun Saeed) an honest gangster whose world changed after falling in love at first sight, Zarnab (Yumna Zaidi) a sincere and successful TV show host who lives on her terms and Rehmati (Adnan Siddique) who spoils his relationship with Munna by loving the same girl Zarnab.
Pakistan’s popular playwright Khalil-ur-Rehman Qamar and director Haissam Hussain mixed this brew to its maximum potential. ‘Gentleman’ didn’t fetch the desired TRPs and viewership as expected from a Humayun Saeed starrer, but nevertheless, it entertained to the fullest.
‘Gentleman’: The Finale Episodes
Munna was furious over Dilbar’s (Ahmed Ali Butt) death and was waiting for Rehmati (Adnan Siddique) to get discharged from the hospital so that he could kill him. He was set to marry Zarnab (Yumna Zaidi) on a Sunday evening until some armed men allegedly sent by DCO Faris (Zahid Ahmed) kill important men from Munna’s gang. On confirmation, the latter kills the former at his place. In the end, Munna makes Rehmati shoot the manipulative ministers and eventually kills him too. Munna surrenders himself but is shot by the police, the end however hints at sequel.
No ‘Gentleman’ Without Khalil-Ur-Rehman Qamar
The subject of ‘Gentleman’ was the need of the hour as it gave a much-needed break from the drab soap operas and till date, we don’t have a full-fledged drama based on gangsters. ‘Gentleman’ would not be what it is without Khalil-ur-Rehman Qamar. It wouldn’t be wrong to say that this is Rehman’s best work to date. The long monologues with oodles of drama, wit, humor, romance, and patriotism were so endearing that one can watch the scenes on repeat to savor the essence of his craft.
Gangster Drama Done Right
Haissam Hussain does a terrific job. It is always a risk to pull off an enterprise like this and make it look relevant in this day and age. He maintains a steady pace, neither too fast nor too dragging. He handles the narrative like a seasoned pro. He established all the characters and settings before Munna and Zarnab’s love story. While doing so, one thing remained his top priority i.e, maintaining the entertainment quotient. The protagonist as well as the antagonist are well fleshed out to have a clear understanding of the proceedings.
Performances That Excel
It is quite a task to shine in a project starring Humayun Saeed but ‘Gentleman’ has its share of star-studded performances. Starting from the evergreen Saeed, it is good to see him in such a space for the first time. We don’t think he could have got a more cohesive script at this phase of his career. He is outstanding. Yuman Zaidi shines as Zarnab, she looks lovely and delivers a career-best performance yet again. Zahid Ahmed is now getting meaty scripts and ‘Gentleman’ is a big feather in his cap. He was a big surprise, apart from his fake mustache he nailed the part.
Sohai Ali Abro, where have you been? This is what you call ‘back with a bang’. She gets some of the best lines and she slays it well with her super crisp performance. One forgets actor Adnan Siddique when watching him as Rehmati. His act was on another level altogether. Ahmed Ali Butt rocks the show and how. His character was supposed to be a sidekick but it never felt like. He was simply amazing. We need to have super supporting fathers on screen like Khaled Anam as Zarnab’s father. The veteran actor had an important part, with all his experience, he did complete justice to it.
