“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” has broken the record for the biggest opening weekend for any film ever released in Pakistan. Earning PKR 25 Cr in just 3 days, it demolished all other records set by domestic and international releases.
Records, Records Everywhere!
Just this Eid Ul Fitr, “Aag Lagay Basti Mein” had broken the record for the best domestic opening weekend, with a total of PKR 16.2 Cr; a mantle it had taken from “Love Guru” the Eid before at PKR 12.8 Cr. However, the wall-crawler trumped those totals and then some to climb to the top of the charts.
“Spiderman: Brand New Day” has broken records all over the world. It earned $169 million in North America on its opening day, taking the number one spot for the best opening day ever. The record was previously held by “Avengers: Endgame” at $157 million.
The film also became the second highest earning for an opening weekend worldwide with $927 million! With collections just shy of the big B, it only lost out to its big brother, “Avengers: Endgame”.
Spiderman Highlights Pakistan’s Box Office Capacity
A total of PKR 25 Cr shows just how popular Spiderman is as a superhero and as a general icon in Pakistan. I’ve watched the film, and the theaters are running special ads for National Pakistan’s Mayonnaise and Drizzl Sauce before it starts. The hype for the web-head is insane.
However, Spider-Man also highlights just how high the earning potential is in Pakistan. A cursory search revealed that just at the Nueplex Cinemas branches in Karachi, “Spiderman: Brand New Day” has over 50 shows in a single day. That’s nuts!
So, what can we take away from this? Everyone loves Spiderman? Of course they do. Superman and Batman can go cry in the corner. However, the other thing we can learn, is that a universal commercial entertainer has incredible pull in Pakistan.
Children, teenagers, adults, parents, and even elders will show up for a film which they can enjoy together. We need a lot of those in Pakistan to truly take advantage of our cinema circuit’s earning potential.
