Over the past month, all kinds of trailers have flashed on our screens, from historical fiction to coming of age drama involving crime and friendship to even a rape-revenge saga. So how have things been faring at the more creepier side of cinema? Director Syed Atif Ali who helmed the hit-and-miss horror flick “Pari” is back after a hiatus of nearly four years with his sophomore directorial attempt “Peechay Tou Dekho”.
Bumbling heroes in an evil mansion?
With the picture, the director takes another stab at the potentially lucrative horror genre, this time with an added twist of comedy. Yasir Hussain and Aadi Adeel star as the film’s two street smart protagonists who stumble into a suitably macabre mansion with its share of secrets (and ghouls?) to unlock. Here they encounter Waqar Hussain in his latest gender bending avatar, who warns them against opening a certain ominous looking door.
And you know exactly what happens next, right? The doorway opens up and it seems the trailer has flashed back to the 60s, where we encounter an amorous but rather garishly made up romantic duo. It seems the plot will involve the backstory of one of the otherworldly forces inhabiting the mansion.
Next we see a montage of shots, some even involving stock horror-mainstays such as the scary twin girls (a nod to “The Shining”, perhaps). And given that “Peechay Tou Dekho” is a Pakistani film there’s bound to be some song-and-dance, so here we have some dancing corpses — or were those just pale looking ghouls? The movie should offer more answers.
The bottomline
As far the trailer goes, this looks like an improvement over Atif Ali’s earlier attempt “Par”.’ The post production appears decent minus the (at places) choppy CGI, and the casting choices for the two somewhat hapless heroes seem to be on point. The cast’s supporting credits look solid, as well: Waqar Hussain always pitches in a welcome surprise and seasoned actors like Amir Qureishi are also listed on the credits.
