The latest animated feature “Minions: The Rise of Gru” was not expected to do great business on opening weekend in America due to the dull performance of recently released animated feature “Lightyear” that could manage a mediocre debut of $51 million only. After that, “Minions: The Rise of Gru” was speculated for a debut of roughly around $70 million but the film has surprisingly exceeded the expectations by huge margin with a debut of $125 million over extended weekend (due to national holiday on 4th July).
In Pakistan too, the fifth installment of “Despicable Me” franchise has opened to a good start despite being released in a Pre-Eid week which is usually considered a dull week for box office. According to trade analyst Ali Zain, film collected 22 lac PKR on Friday, 26 lac PKR on Saturday, 30 lac PKR on Sunday and then 14 lacs PKR on Monday. The daily growth over the weekend has been quite encouraging and the film has already crossed 1 crore PKR mark on Tuesday. It will manage to get shows on all major multiplexes during Eid season and is expected to attract family audience with kids to theatres during the holidays.
