In another victory for Pakistani cinema, acclaimed film maker Nabeel Qureishi’s “Load Wedding” has won an award for Best Picture International at the Rajasthan International Film Festival. When this news came out last night, it left fans of homegrown cinema elated. However some confusion prevailed over the category that award belonged to. While the promotional material distributed by the film festival slotted Load Wedding’s prize in the Viewers’ Choice category, reliable sources insisted that the film won the more prestigious ‘Jury Award’.
We reached out to the film’s producer, the lady behind FilmWala productions Fizza Ali Meerza to help us in sorting out the confusion. She confirmed that the film indeed won in the Jury Award category for the ‘Best Feature Film (International)’. The award provides critical validation for Nabeel and Fizza’s socially relevant romantic comedy that focused on negative wedding related traditions and attitudes. Released on Eid-ul-Azha last year, the film managed a decent run at the box office despite stiff competition.
Rajasthan International Film Festival is an annual five day event that showcases diverse film projects from all over the world, and includes a variety of workshops, seminars and festival premieres. That Pakistani film-makers are gaining footing in the international market is a positive development by any count, and we look forward to films like “Load Wedding” being provided a formal exhibition platform in India and other markets in the world.
