Horror and humor are as different as chalk and cheese. Yet these two elements have been combined with varying degrees of success over the last two decades or so, giving rise to the horror-comedy sub-genre, a type of cinema that has gained much prominence in Pakistan recently. With ‘Lafangey’, the country is set to get a truly commercial, mass-oriented horror-comedy feature that also utilizes some of the best contemporary acting talent.
The trailer offers a whiff of what’s on offer in this Abdul Khaaliq Khan directed spectacle that opens on Eid-ul-Azha. Featuring Sami Khan, Salman Saqib aka Maani, Saleem Mairaj, and Mubeen Gabol as the four ‘lafangey’ who end up marooned inside a forlorn looking haveli, the film seems to revolve around the part-scary part-goofball adventures of the group. The four are shown encountering demonic looking creatures and dealing with some rather macabre situations. Thrown into the mix is everything from an erotic-dancing number to the local variant of a shaman/soothsayer called in to ward off the evil that dwells within the four walls. Besides the four male leads, the film also features the talents of Nazish Jahangir and Behroze Sabzwari, although we don’t see much of either.
The content here is rather mass-oriented, with plenty of double entendres — humor that will likely resonate with a certain segment of the paying audience. In terms of production, the movie looks about alright as well. With names like Sami Khan and Saleem Mairaj amongst its cast, it is quite likely that the film will not disappoint in terms of its actors’ performances. However, a more definitive verdict can only be offered after viewing the film.
‘Lafangey’ is produced by Tariq Habib Rind and releases across the nation this Eid-ul-Azha. You can check out the trailer below.
