Pakistani films opened to decent occupancies in cinemas on Eid-ul-Fitr which provided some hope to local film makers as none of the previous local films post pandemic has been able to make it to break-even status. However, with the release of “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” in Pakistan, the local releases started to suffer due to allocation of most of the shows to the Hollywood flick.
After the ‘Doctor Strange’ frenzy was over within few days, the local films were expected to regain momentum during the second weekend. However, the overall performance of all the films over the second weekend, be it Hollywood or local, is unimpressive.
The Saba Qamar starrer “Ghabrana Nahi Hai” lead the box office race of local films by collecting 8.34 crore PKR till Tuesday. It is followed by “Dum Mastam” which, according to Box Office Detail, generated a total of 5.8 crores PKR till Sunday.
Hania Amir and Ali Rehman starrer “Parde Mein Rehne Do” stands third in the box office race collecting 3.4 crores PKR while “Chakkar” remained on fourth spot with 2.4 crores PKR till second Sunday. The Syed Noor directorial Punjabi film “Tere Bajre Di Rakhi” managed to collect 90 lacs PKR till second weekend.
According to these numbers, “Ghabrana Nahi Hai” might be the only film to reach the break-even point among Eid releases and it might be the first time that Wajahat Rauf and Yasir Nawaz would taste failure at box office as their previous films ranged from the status of average-hit, i-e, “Mehrunisa V Lub You” and “Lahore Sey Agey”, to the blockbusters, i-e, “Wrong No. 2” and “Chhalawa”. The producers of “Dum Mastam”, due to high production cost of their film, are certainly going to face high loss while for a low budgeted regional film like “Tere Bajre Di Rakhi”, 90 lacs PKR is not a bad number at all.
