In a major victory for Pakistani animation films, Talisman Studios’ The Donkey King has recorded some impressive figures over the weekend. As we had written previously, the movie opened to solid figures on Friday, earning 35 lacs, and collections had then showed a jump of almost 200% on Saturday, hitting the 1 crore mark. The solid trending extended to Sunday, with the movie surpassing 1 crore and earning 1.4 crores, with a healthy jump of 40% over the previous day’s figures. The aggregate weekend collections were recorded around the 2.75 crore mark — a very robust figure and comparable to what mainstream Pakistani movies such as Verna, Parchi and Jalaibee have earned. That The Donkey King, which was targeted at a younger audience was able to achieve these figures bodes well for the future of animation films in the country.
The lifetime gross of the movie hinges on how the movie trends on Monday and the growth over its second weekend. As has been witnessed for most animated kids’ features previously, the films usually see a significant dip in their audience over the weekdays followed by jumps in footfalls over the weekend. It remains to be seen if King can become the first film of its genre to touch 10 crore mark in the country.
