An ageing film star, a new face to take her place, everything on the line; we’ve heard this story before. However, what gives “Baaji” its authenticity is Meera. The official trailer of Baaji has been released and it oozes glitz and glamour. The film is, by all standards, going to be a hit this year.
The trailer highlights the trials and tribulations that Shameera, played by Meera (a play on her own name of course), is going through now that the sun is setting on her stardom. She’s befriended by Neha, played by Amna Ilyas, who becomes a new source of light in her life. However, when strapping new director Rohail Khan, played by Osman Khalid Butt, enters their lives in search of a ‘classic Chehra’, conflicts begin to emerge.
The film features a disco themed remix of the song “Don’t be Silly” by Runa Laila from the film Sabaq (1972) along with a jazz themed remix of “Yeh Aaj Mujhko kya hua” by Naheed Akhtar, sung this time by Zebunnisa Bangash. It seems like the film’s focus on the old-meets-new-in-the-film theme extends to every aspect, including the music.
The film features beautiful wide shots and close ups, clearly showing director Saqib Malik’s steady hand behind the camera. Not only is the wardrobe phenomenal, but every shot looks saturated and luminous, exactly what a film which focuses on the glitz and glamour of cinema needs.
The film has a star cast filled with the old and the new faces of the Pakistani film industry which is why it lends itself to authenticity. Gracing the screen apart from its three leads are Nayyer Ejaz, the illustrious Nisho Begum, Mohsin Abbas Haider, Ali Kazmi and even Zebunnisa Bangash.
Baaji releases on the 28th of June.
