Sarmad Khoosat’s Latest Movie “Lali” Will Premiere at the Berlin International Film Festival

Sarmad Khoosat’s latest feature film, “Lali” is going to have its world premiere at the 76th Berlin International Film Festival!

Colloquially called the Berlinale, the Berlin International Film Festival is one of the 3 oldest and most prestigious film festivals in the world along with the Cannes and Venice. Sarmad Khoosat’s film premiere at the Berlinale is itself an incredible achievement.

Lali is being screened as part of the Panorama section of the festival, which makes it eligible for jury awards. The Panorama section looks for what is “new, daring, unconventional and wild” in international cinema.

Described as a “darkly comic tale”, Lali focuses on a wedding celebration from the look of the poster. The wedding is between Zeba and Sajawal, two characters caught in the restless world shared by the living and ghosts.

From this description we can surmise that director Sarmad Khoosat is delving deeper into the fantastical world he barely scratched the surface of in ‘Kamli’.

However, this maybe Sarmad Khoosat’s first serious experiment with a dark comedy. One could argue that ‘Zindagi Tamasha’ was an extremely bleak and comic in certain places, but this maybe something different altogether

‘Lali’ stars Mamya Shajaffar, Channan Hanif, Rasti Farooq, Farazeh Syed, and Mehr Bano.

It has been co-written by Sarmad Khoosat and first timer Sundus Hashmi who previously served as the Associate Director for ‘Kamli’ and ‘Zindagi Tamasha’.

The film has been edited by Saim Sadiq, the director of ‘Joyland’, who also previously edited Sarmad’s ‘Kamli’.

The Berlinale will run from February 12-22, 2026. For those interested in attending the film’s premiere, you will find ticket info right here.
