There are many instances in the trailer for Gunjal (Entangled) where characters ask about the truth. “Gunjal” itself means “Pecheeda” in Urdu, which translates roughly to convoluted.
The trailer shows young journalist Shahbaz Bhatti, played by Ahmed Ali Akbar, investigating the murder of one “Irfan Masih”, a child activist who had campaigned against child labour and particularly, bonded labour, in the 1990s. The story is based on the murder of “Iqbal Masih” who was a young Christian labourer who rose to prominence in the early 1990s.
The cast features some very impressive acting talent including Resham, Ahmad Ali Butt, Omair Rana, and Amna Ilyas. However, the story is front and center here.
Those of our readers who already know about Iqbal Masih, or who would care to go and read about him should know that the truth about him is quite muddled. Questions about his age and his murder are still unsolved. This is why the questions about the truth in “Gunjal” matter.
At one point, Ahmad Ali Butt, who ostensibly plays a prominent politician in the film says, “One sided crusade is not research.” True. However, even if truth is complicated, it’s still the truth.
Let’s see what truth Gunjal unveils. The film comes out on 8th of December, 2023.
