The teaser of ‘Psycho’ begins with the definition of the word psycho in red letters against a black screen. It says “to a psycho all is justified”.
Interspersed with shots of Meera’s eyes, her menacing silhouette and her blood soaked face, this one signals a no-holds-barred gore fest, but also a commentary on what psychopathy is. The last shot, which features Shaan Shahid brandishing a gun, probably shows him in the role of a police officer or detective.
While the teaser doesn’t give away the plot, a few comparisons immediately come to mind; namely the Hannibal Lecter films and Pakistan’s own “Durj”. This genre is not untouched in the subcontinent and Meera has a lot of experience playing psychologically complex characters. Fans of hers may remember her notable roles in “Khilona”(1996) and “Khoye Ho Tum Kahaan”(2001).
However, she’s never played a psychopath before. Whether the film will dive into the complexities of such a character remains to be seen. Several psychopaths remain perfectly functioning members of society while maintaining cold, harsh views of society. Some completely lack empathy.
Writer-Director Shaan Shahid’s latest film is definitely not something he’s attempted before. And it feels very different from his previous features.
Psycho stars Meera, Shaan Shahid, Sonya Hussyn, Javed Sheikh, Nayyer Ejaz, Shabbir Jan, and Adnan Ahmed Butt. It is slated for release in cinemas worldwide on Eid Ul Azha 2026.
